Who was Mary Magdalene?
Mary, distinguished by her toponym “Magdalene or Magdala” which was a fishing town located on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. It is not known if Magdala was the place of her birth or where she was raised.
Mary Magdalene was one of several women who traveled with Jesus and his disciples and offered material and spiritual support (Luke 8:1-3).
She was an eyewitness of Jesus’ execution, and she was among the first to see him after he was resurrected (Mark 15:40; John 20:11-18).
Mary in Missing Gospels
In the Gospel of Philip, believed to have been written by early Christians as early as the second century A.D., referred to Mary as Jesus’ companion, claiming that Jesus loved her more than the other disciples.
The text stated that Jesus used to kiss Mary “often on her ____.” The last word in the text is unreadable, but some scholars have filled in the missing word as “mouth.”
