The Full Story
The Holy Grail
The Holy Chalice, also known as the Holy Grail, is in Christian tradition the vessel that Jesus used at the Last Supper to serve wine. According to Catholic tradition, Saint Peter used the Holy Chalice during Mass, and took it with him to Rome.
In Leonardo DaVinci's painting "The Last Supper," there is not one cup, chalice or grail included on the table suitable to contain wine.
This leads many people to look for a hidden chalice in the painting, because the Last Supper is the defining moment when the Holy Grail was introduced (according to the Catholic Church).
The symbol V
The original symbol and icon for female is the "V" shape, which is called "the chalice." The chalice resembles a cup, vessel or, in this case, the shape of a woman's womb.
If you look at the space between Jesus and the feminine-looking figure with long flowing red hair on his right-hand side, you will see a large V in the negative space.
Other hidden symbols
The use of opposite colors between Jesus and Mary also represent the yinyang symbolism of opposites (in this case, male-female).
Many scholars have examined Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" for its hidden symbols and meaning.
